Second Notification - September 2023
Excessive Deficit Procedure
According to EU regulations, Statistics Portugal will send to Eurostat, until the end of the current month, the 2nd notification of 2023 regarding the Excessive Deficit Procedure (EDP).
The estimate of net borrowing of the Regional Public Administration of Madeira in 2022 amounted to 142.1 million euros. This figure was 4.2 million euros lower than what was reported in the preliminary 1st notification earlier in the year. It should be noted that in 2021, the net borrowing was higher, at around 213.0 million euros.
In 2022, the Regional Gross Debt stood at 5,008.8 million euros, having decreased by approximately 68.3 million euros (-1.3%) compared to the year 2021.

In the country as a whole, the net borrowing of the General Government (GG) in 2022 reached 779.1 million euros, which corresponded to 0.3% of the Portuguese GDP. In turn, in that year, the gross debt of the GG amounted to 272.4 billion euros, that is, 112.4% of GDP. In the Autonomous Region of the Azores, the balance of the Regional Government showed a deficit of 395.1 million euros, and the gross debt of the Regional Government of the Azores in 2022 was 3,063.5 million euros.
