More than 90.5% of the private households of the Autonomous Region of Madeira had an internet connection at home
According to the results of the Survey on the Usage of Information and Communication Technologies in Households for 2021, 90.5% of the private households in the Autonomous Region of Madeira had access to the Internet at home (87.1% through broadband), an increase of 2.5 percentage points (pp) compared to 2020.
Back in 2010, the household internet access rate was only 54.0% (36.5 pp lower than in 2021 ). The percentage of households in the Autonomous Region of Madeira with Internet access is higher than at national level (87.3%).
The proportion of persons, with at least one member aged between 16 and 74 years old, that used the internet in the 12 months prior to the interview stood at 85.0%, up by 3.0 pp over 2020 (82.0%). Regarding internet usage in the 3 months prior to the interview, 84.1% of the persons in that age group mentioned having used the internet, an increase of 80.0% over 2020 (+4.1 pp).
The use of the internet to make purchases or orders (electronic commerce) was carried out by 40.7% of persons aged 16 to 74 years old, in the 12 months prior to the interview (51.6% for Portugal), +3.0 pp than in 2020 and in the 3 months before the interview it stood at 31.2%, +2.6 pp than in the previous year. This regional value stands below the country’s average, which was 40.4%.
Of the employed internet users, 11.4% worked from home, 8.2% worked from home due to COVID-19 and 10.0% worked remotely using Information and Communication (ICT), namely computer and/or smartphone. The proportion of people working remotely in the Autonomous Region of Madeira was 10.1 pp lower than that recorded for the whole country (20.1%).
The most used ICTs in teleworking were videoconferencing (79.8% of employees working remotely), e-mail (79.0%), shared folders in internet storage space (cloud computing; 60.0%), web or extranet applications (45.2%) and connection via virtual private network (VPN) (42.3%).
