Utilization of e-commerce increased by 4 percentage points compared to the previous year, but remains below the national average
The results of the Survey on the Usage of Information and Communication Technologies by Households, conducted between May and July 2023, indicate that 91.5% of the private households in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) had internet access, representing an increase of 0.7 percentage points compared to 2022. Broadband usage reached 88.9%, showing an increase of 1.7 percentage points from the previous year. Only in Área Metropolitana de Lisboa (94.6%; 91.3%) and in the Autonomous Region of the Azores (93.6%; 90.4%) is home internet connection and broadband usage more common than in the ARM. For Portugal, the proportion of households with internet access stood at a lower level, at 89.0%, and 85.8% through broadband.
The proportion of persons residing in the ARM aged between 16 and 74 who reported using the internet in the last 3 months prior to the interview was 86.9%, reflecting an increase of 0.8 percentage points compared to 2022 (86.1%). This proportion for the entire country (85.8%) was lower than that of the Region. Área Metropolitana de Lisboa (92.0%) and the Algarve (89.2%) surpassed the values of the ARM. Norte was the region with the lowest proportion in the country (82.2%).
Communication and information access continue to be the main activities carried out by persons aged 16 to 74 who used the internet in the 3 months prior to the interview in 2023. In the ARM, 93.7% exchanged instant messages (via WhatsApp, Messenger, etc.), and 83.1% participated in social networks. In the country, the situation was similar, with 92.2% engaging in instant messaging and 87.5% sending or receiving emails (80.9% in the ARM).
In the year under review, the data shows that 52.1% of persons aged 16 to 74 have basic or above basic digital skills (56.0% nationally). Considering only above basic skills, this proportion is 25.5% (30.0% nationally).
Of those who used the Internet in the last 12 months, 66.0% (65.0% in 2022) reported interacting with public entities through websites or Internet applications. At the national level, this percentage stood at 69.6%, with Área Metropolitana de Lisboa having the highest proportion (79.6%).
The use of a Citizen Card or Mobile Digital Key as a form of digital authentication for accessing online services was mentioned by 28.1% of internet users aged 16 to 74 in the ARM. Nationally, the results show that, under these conditions, 30.4% of persons used the Citizen Card or Mobile Digital Key.
In 2023, 36.5% of residents in the ARM aged 16 to 74 resorted to e-commerce in the 3 months prior to the interview (43.9% for Portugal), i.e., +4.0 percentage points compared to 2022.
