Note: As of 02/12/2024, the expanded time series has been made available, now covering data for persons aged 16 to 74 regarding digital skills, frequency of Internet usage by sex, activities conducted on the Internet (particularly the use of advanced services), use of ICT in telecommuting during the pandemic period, and the characterisation of household access to telecommunications services such as subscription television, digital terrestrial television (DTT), landline telephone, and fixed Internet.

67.4% was the proportion of persons who interacted with public entities through websites or Internet applications 

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) publishes the results of the Survey on the Usage of Information and Communication Technologies by Households, conducted between May and August 2024.

In 2024, 92.6% of the private households in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) had internet access, representing an increase of 1.1 percentage points (pp) compared to 2023. Broadband usage reached 88.9%, maintaining the same value as the previous year.

The proportion of persons residing in the ARM aged between 16 and 74 who reported using the internet in the last 3 months prior to the interview was 87.6%, reflecting an increase of 0.7 pp compared to 2023 (86.9%). This proportion for the entire country (88.5%) was higher than that of the Region. Peninsula de Setúbal (95.3%), Grande Lisboa (94,1%), Algarve (91,5%)  and the Autonomous Region of Azores (ARA) (88.3%) surpassed the values of the ARM. Alentejo was the region with the lowest proportion in the country (85,4%).

Communication continues to be the main activity carried out by persons aged 16 to 74 who used the internet in the 3 months prior to the interview: in the ARM, 90.5% exchanged instant messages (via WhatsApp, Messenger, etc.), and 79.2% made phone or video calls over the internet. Nationally, similar patterns emerged, with 93.3% engaging in instant messaging and 86.7% sending or receiving emails (78.2% in the ARM).

Among those who used the Internet in the last 12 months, 67.4% (up from 66.0% in 2023) reported interacting with public entities through websites or Internet applications. At the national level, this percentage stood at 75.9%, with Grande Lisboa region having the highest proportion (85.5%).

In 2024, 38.4% of residents in the ARM aged 16 to 74 resorted to e-commerce in the 3 months prior to the interview, +1.9 pp compared to 2023, this being the highest value in the series started in 2013. In Portugal, this proportion was 48.9%, 5.0 pp higher than the previous year.

During the same period, 93,3% of households had access to TV by subscription, 0.5 pp higher than in 2023. This proportion was 4.6 pp higher than the national average (88,7%).

The proportion of households who had access to Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) at home rose to 16.9%, which corresponded to 15 335 households with 20 456 televisions connected to DTT. Additionally, in the ARM 12.6% of households had both subscription television and DTT, 3.6 pp lower than in the country (16.2%).
