Aggregate value of withdrawals and purchases through automatic payment terminals of the SIBS network grew by 4.8% year-on-year
Data provided by Interbank Services Society (SIBS) for the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), referring to the second quarter of 2026, indicate that the amounts relating to the two main operations of the SIBS network, withdrawals and purchases through automatic payment terminals (APT), considered together, reached 814.3 million euros (2.7% of the national total), corresponding to an increase of 4.8% compared with the same period of the previous year (+5.2% nationally). This growth was due to the 7.5% increase recorded in purchases through APT (+8.7% nationally), since withdrawals showed a year-on-year decrease of 4.0% (-4.9% nationally).
By card origin, it should be noted that the overall increase mentioned above resulted from the year-on-year increase recorded both in transactions carried out with national cards (+5.2%) and with international cards (+3.7%). Nationally, the changes were +5.6% and +2.4%, respectively.
With regard to withdrawals, the analysis by card origin shows that, in the second quarter of 2026, operations carried out with national cards reached 161.1 million euros, while those carried out with international cards totalled 14.1 million euros, translating into year-on-year changes of -3.5% and -9.4%, respectively.
In turn, purchases through APT carried out with national cards reached 452.7 million euros, equivalent to an increase of 8.6% compared with the second quarter of 2025, while those carried out with international cards reached 186.4 million euros, corresponding to growth of 4.9% compared with the same period of the previous year.
The analysis of purchases by method of purchase shows the predominance of in-person purchases, which totalled 604.7 million euros, corresponding to 94.6% of total purchases made. In turn, online purchases stood at 34.4 million euros, representing the remaining 5.4%. Year-on-year, in-person purchases recorded growth of 8.3%, while online purchases showed a decrease of 4.9%.
In the second quarter of 2026, purchases made through APT were concentrated mainly in the "Wholesale and retail trade" (56.4% of the total) and "Accommodation and food service activities" (22.9% of the total) sectors.

The analysis of data by municipality shows that, in the second quarter of 2026, Funchal accounted for 489.1 million euros in withdrawals and purchases through APT, corresponding to 60.1% of the Region's total. In this municipality, the year-on-year growth of the aggregate movement of these operations was 5.4%. Conversely, Porto Moniz recorded the lowest volume of movement, totalling 8.2 million euros, and showed a negative year-on-year change of 6.4%. In turn, Machico stood out for recording the sharpest decline among the Region's municipalities, with a year-on-year decrease of 7.1%.
In cumulative terms, between January and June 2026, the aggregate amount of withdrawals and purchases through APT totalled 1.5 billion euros, corresponding to an increase of 4.2% year-on-year. The movement carried out with national cards stood out, increasing by 5.0% compared with the same period of 2025, while movement with international cards recorded an increase of 1.7%. The breakdown between withdrawals and purchases through APT shows that, while the former declined by 3.4%, the latter rose by 6.7% compared with the same period last year.
