Passenger movement at the Autonomous Region of Madeira airports recorded a year-on-year growth of 4.3%
According to information provided by ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal to the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), in January 2026, a total of 355.7 thousand passengers were recorded at the ARM airports, transported on 2 686 aircraft (commercial flights), reflecting year-on-year changes of +4.3% and +4.0%, respectively.
In the reference month, Madeira Airport recorded an increase both in aircraft movement (2 533; +4.8% compared to January 2025) and in the number of passengers (345.9 thousand; +4.8%). At Porto Santo Airport, a decrease was recorded in aircraft movement (153; -7.3% compared to the same period of 2025) and in the number of passengers (9.8 thousand; -10.0%).

In the reference month, each aircraft (considering both landings and take-offs) carried, on average, approximately 137 passengers (the same value as in January 2025) at Madeira Airport, whilst at Porto Santo Airport, that figure reached 64 passengers (66 in the same period of 2025).
In January 2026, the total number of passenger movement at the ARM airports increased by 7.6% in international traffic (204.8 thousand) and by +0.2% in the domestic segment (150.9 thousand).
At Madeira Airport, international traffic (58.7% of the total) predominated over domestic traffic (41.3%). At Porto Santo Airport, domestic traffic predominated (84.2% of the total), with a greater disproportion compared to the same period of 2025 (75.5%).
In the reference month, scheduled flights at the ARM airports accounted for 92.7% of total aircraft movements and 95.6% of passengers (90.4% and 92.3% in January 2025, respectively).
In January 2026, the occupancy of aircraft at the ARM airports stood at around 78.2%, with Madeira Airport recording the same proportion (78.2%) and Porto Santo Airport 77.7%. In the same month of the previous year, the year-on-year occupancy of aircraft was lower across both regional airports (77.9%), at Madeira Airport (78.0%) and at Porto Santo Airport (75.0%).
In January 2026, passengers embarked and disembarked at the ARM airports (excluding transit passengers) totalled 354.7 thousand, of which 42.5% corresponded to traffic exclusively between airports located in national territory, including domestic and interior connections, and 57.5% to international traffic. Within the latter, the United Kingdom (29.7%) and Germany (21.5%) were the main countries of origin and destination of international flights at the ARM airports. Poland (14.1%) ranked third, followed by the Netherlands (5.5%).
