57.0 thousand overnight stays were reported by tourist accommodation establishments in Madeira, a 90.3% drop compared to the same period in the previous year

The first estimates for February 2021 show that 33.1% of the establishments had a guest flow (40.7% of the total tourist accommodation capacity). Rural tourism had the highest percentage of establishments which had guests (51.6%), followed by Hotel establishments with 42.6% and local accommodation establishments with 31.8%.

In the month of reference, the number of overnight stays in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (considering all local accommodation) stood at 57.0 thousand, a 90.3% decline compared to February 2020. Excluding local accommodation under 10 beds, overnight stays decreased by 92.6% year-on-year. Total revenue and revenue from accommodation amounted to 2.0 and 1.1 million euros, dropping by 92.5% and 93.5%, respectively. In the country, overnight stays plunged by 87.7%, total revenue declined by 90.5% and revenue from accommodation by 89.7%.

The overnight stays in hotel establishments dropped by 94.2% year-on-year and concentrated 50.0% of the total, while the overnight stays in local lodging decreased by 71.7% compared to the same month of the previous year and accounted for 44.6% of the total. In turn, rural tourism registered a year-on-year change rate of -64.1%, representing only 5.4% of overnight stays.

In the main markets, substantial decreases in overnight stays were recorded. The British market had the sharpest drop, with -96.2% in overnight stays, followed by the German market with -92.1% and the French market with -89.8%. The national market also registered a very significant drop (-73.7%) compared to previous months.

The bed occupancy rate in the reference month reached 9.0%, dropping by 44.2 percentage points over the same month of the previous year. In turn, the room occupancy rate reached only 11.0%.

In February 2021, the average income per room (RevPAR) continued to be significantly low, recording a year-on-year change rate of -85.3% and decreasing to €5.35. The average daily rate (ADR) dropped by 20.9% to €48.72.
