Number of overnight stays was much higher than a year ago but substantially lower than in May 2019
The flash estimate of the tourist accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira for May 2021 shows that 47.9 thousand guests were registered generating 206.9 thousand overnight stays. This corresponds to year-on-year changes of 4 850.2% and 4 035.4%, respectively. This extremely pronounced growth compared to May 2020, is in this particular month the tourism activity had many restrictions, with the number of guests standing at 968 and the number of overnight stays at 5.0 thousand.
Comparing May 2021 with May 2019, there is a huge drop of 64.1% in guests and 71.1% in overnight stays.
In the first five months of the year 2021, the tourist accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira registered 592.9 thousand overnight stays (-59.4% than in the same month of 2020). To compare the regional data with the country’s it is necessary to exclude local accommodation under 10 beds. In this case, the number of overnight stays in tourist accommodation establishments shows a decrease of 64.9%, a larger drop than in the country (-48.8%).
In the Region, overnight stays from residents in Portugal increased by 2 024.6% year-on-year, reaching 67.2 thousand and representing 32.5% of the total, while bednights from foreign residents went up by 7 484.1% compared to May 2020, standing at 139.8 thousand. Compared to May 2019, the change in overnight stays from residents in Portugal was -19.1%, while in the case of foreign residents it stood at -77.9%. The number of guests resident in Portugal was estimated at 21.9 thousand and the number of foreign guests was 26.0 thousand.
In the country, in May 2021, overnight stays from residents (share of 61.2%) contributed with 1.3 million and non-residents with 800.1 thousand. Compared to May 2019, there was a decrease of 22.3% in overnight stays from residents in Portugal and of 83.8% in overnight stays from non-residents.

In the Region, the main non-resident issuing markets recorded some recovery in terms of overnight stays compared to the previous month (+81.9%). The United Kingdom market accounted for 24.6 thousand in the reference month, followed by the German with 22.4 thousand and France with 15.9 thousand.
In May, 47.2% of tourist accommodation establishments were closed or did not have any guests. However, in the reference month, the hotel sector had 60.8% of the establishments with a guest flow (50.7% in April).
