Flash estimate – In January 2022, the number of overnight stays in tourist accommodation establishments of the Autonomous Region of Madeira rose year-on-year, but stood below the 2019 figure
The flash estimate of the tourist accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira for the month of January 2022 shows that 59.7 thousand guest arrivals were registered generating 391.9 thousand overnight stays. This corresponds to year-on-year changes of +221.8% and +227.7%, respectively. In January 2021, Madeira’s tourist accommodation establishments recorded only 18.6 thousand guests and around 119.6 thousand overnight stays.
Comparing January 2022 with January 2019, the number of incoming guests and overnight decreased by 21.6% and 25.6%, respectively.
To compare the regional data with the country’s it is necessary to exclude local accommodation under 10 beds. In this case, the number of overnight stays in tourism accommodation establishments shows an increase of 261.4%, a more pronounced change than the one recorded at a national level (+185.9%).
In the Region, overnight stays from residents in Portugal increased by 133.6% year-on-year, reaching 54.7 thousand and representing 14.0% of the total, while overnight stays from foreign residents went up by 250.6% compared to January 2021, standing at 337.2 thousand. Compared to January 2019, the change in overnight stays from residents in Portugal was +22.5%, while in the case of residents abroad there was a decrease of 30.1%. The number of guests resident in Portugal, in 2022, was estimated at 14.2 thousand and the foreign guests at 45.5 thousand.
In the country, in January 2022, the domestic market contributed with 857.7 thousand overnight stays (+104.5%) and the external markets totalled 1.1 million (+308.7%).

In the Region, the main source markets of non-residents represented 86.0% of overnight stays. In this set, the UK market was the one with the highest number of overnight stays, accounting for 91.3 thousand in the respective month, followed by Germany with 83.9 thousand and France with 12.2 thousand.
In January of 2022, 25.8% of the tourism accommodation establishments were either closed or did not have any guests. In the reference month, the hotel sector had 84.9% of the establishments with a guest flow (same percentage that in December 2021).
