Flash estimate – In the month of November 2022, the overnight stays in tourist accommodation in the Autonomous Region of Madeira grew by 26.1% year-on-year

The flash estimate of the tourism accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira for the month of November 2022 shows that 134.0 thousand guest arrivals were registered, generating 731.2 thousand overnight stays. This corresponds to year-on-year changes of +36.9% and +26.1%, respectively. Compared to November 2019, there were, by the same order, increases of 44.5% and 33.5%.

The year-to-date values of incoming guests, for the period January to November 2022, surpassed the annual values (January to December) of previous years, almost doubling (+96.5%) the figure of the same period of 2021.

Comparing the regional data with the country’s it is necessary to exclude local accommodation under 10 beds, and according to the number of overnight stays in tourism accommodation establishments, there was a year-on-year increase of 21.7%, a sharper change than the one recorded at the national level (+19,4%).

In the Region, the overnight stays from residents in Portugal grew by 61.9% year-on-year, reaching 110.1 thousand and representing 15.1% of the total, while overnight stays from foreign residents went up by 21.4% compared to November 2021, standing at 621.1 thousand. It is worth noting that, compared to November 2019, the change in overnight stays from residents in Portugal was +87.4% and the residents abroad were 27.0%. The number of guests arrivals, resident in Portugal, in November 2022, was estimated at 32.8 thousand and the foreign guests at 101.2 thousand.

In the country, in November 2022, the domestic market contributed with 1.3 million overnight stays (+6,3%) and the external markets (with a share of 68.9%) totalled 2.9 million (+26.4% compared to November 2021).

According to the flash estimate, the main source markets of non-residents represented 84.9% of overnight stays. In this set, the German market was the one with the highest number of overnight stays, accounting for 170.6 thousand in the respective month, followed by United Kingdom with 157.2 thousand and France with 29.6 thousand.

In November of 2022, 15.0% of the tourism accommodation establishments were either closed or did not have any guests. In the reference month, the hotel sector had 90.4% of the establishments with a guest flow.
