Flash estimate – In the month of January 2023, the overnight stays in tourism accommodation in the Autonomous Region of Madeira grew by 75.1% year-on-year
The flash estimate of the tourism accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira for the month of January 2023 shows that 123.7 thousand guest arrivals were registered, generating 691.1 thousand overnight stays. This corresponds to year-on-year changes of +105.7% and +75.1%, respectively. Compared to January 2019, there was, by the same order, an increase of 62.5% and 31.2%.
Comparing the regional data with the country’s it is necessary to exclude local accommodation under 10 beds, and according to the number of overnight stays in tourist accommodation establishments, in January 2023, there was a year-on-year increase of 72.8%, slightly lower than the national level (+74.5%).
In the Region, the overnight stays from residents in Portugal grew by 110.3% year-on-year, reaching 106.1 thousand and representing 15.4% of the total, while overnight stays from foreign residents went up by 69.9% compared to January 2022, standing at 585.0 thousand. It is worth noting that, compared to January 2019, the change in overnight stays from residents in Portugal was +137.4% while in the residents abroad stood at 21.4%. The number of guests arrivals, resident in Portugal, in January 2023, was estimated at 28.6 thousand and the foreign guests at 95.1 thousand.
In the country, in January 2023, the domestic market contributed with 1.2 million overnight stays, having increased by 38.7%. External markets totalled 2.3 million overnight stays (+101.3%).

According to the flash estimate, in the Region, the main source markets of non-residents represented 84.6% of overnight stays. Within this set, the United Kingdom market is the one with the highest number of overnight stays, accounting for 155.1 thousand in the respective month, followed by Germany with 146.6 thousand and France with 25.7 thousand.
In January of 2023, 11.9% of the tourist accommodation establishments were either closed or did not have any guests.
