Flash estimate – In the month of February 2023, the overnight stays in tourism accommodation establishments of the Autonomous Region of Madeira grew by 61.6% year-on-year
The flash estimate of the tourism accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira for the month of February 2023 shows that 140.5 thousand guest arrivals were registered, generating 726.6 thousand overnight stays. This corresponds to year-on-year changes of +56.5% and +61.6%, respectively. Compared to February 2019, there were, by the same order, an increase of 54.2% and 34.2%.
Comparing the regional data with the country’s it is necessary to exclude local accommodation under 10 beds, and according to this metric, the number of overnight stays in tourist accommodation establishments went up by 58.1% in the Region, a higher change than in the country (+38.5%).
In the Region, the overnight stays from residents in Portugal grew by 71.3% year-on-year, reaching 118.6 thousand and representing 16.3% of the total, while overnight stays from foreign residents went up by 59.8% compared to February 2022, standing at 608.0 thousand. It is worth noting that, compared to February 2019, the change in overnight stays from residents in Portugal was +151.7% and the residents abroad were 23.0%. The number of guests arrivals, resident in Portugal, in February 2023, was estimated at 37.1 thousand and the foreign guests at 103.4 thousand.
In the country, in February 2023, the domestic market contributed with 1.4 million overnight stays, having increased by 19.0%. External markets predominated (66.3%) and totalled 2.7 million overnight stays (+51.0%).

According to the flash estimate, the main source markets of non-residents represented 83.7% of overnight stays. Within this set, the United Kingdom market is the one with the highest number of overnight stays, accounting for 159.4 thousand in the respective month, followed by Germany with 149.1 thousand and France with 40.3 thousand.
In February of 2023, 14.4% of the tourist accommodation establishments were either closed or did not have any guests.
