Compared to September 2019, there were increases of 49.2% and 33.8% in the same order, respectively. It's worth noting that for the first time, September exceeded the 1 million overnight stays threshold, a milestone previously achieved in July and August.
From January to September 2023, overnight stays reached 8.4 million, an increase of +15.3% compared to the same period of the previous year.

Under this criterion, overnight stays in tourist accommodation in September 2023 showed a year-on-year increase of 4.7%, a change lower than the national level (+6.7%).
In the Region, overnight stays by residents of Portugal experienced a 3.7% decline compared to the same month last year, totalling 177.9 thousand (17.1% of the total), while those by residents from abroad increased by 12.5%, reaching 863.0 thousand. By region, Norte recorded the highest growth (+13.5%), while the Algarve had the lowest increase (+2.2%).

The initial estimated data for the reference month in the Region show that foreign resident emitting markets represented 82.9% of the total overnight stays. Among these, the UK market recorded the most overnight stays in September 2023, with around 211.9 thousand (-3.3% compared to the same month last year), followed by Germany with 209.4 thousand (+10.3%), and France with 70.8 thousand (+8.3%).
