Tourist accommodation in the Autonomous Region of Madeira experienced year-on-year growth of 10.3% in overnight stays
According to the preliminary data for the tourist accommodation sector in the region, for the month of October 2023, an entry of 194.1 thousand guests is estimated, generating 988.8 thousand overnight stays, reflecting year-on-year changes of +12.9% and +10.3%, respectively. Compared to October 2019, increases of 62.0% and 44.1% were recorded in the same order.
From January to October 2023, overnight stays totalled around 9.4 million, representing a +14.8% increase compared to the same period of the preceding year. For the sake of comparability with data released by Statistics Portugal (INE), it is necessary to exclude local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds. Following this method of result calculation overnight stays in tourist accommodation in October 2023 showed a year-on-year increase of 5.9%, a change lower than that observed at the national level (+8.5%).
In the region, overnight stays by residents in Portugal increased by approximately 6.2% compared to the same month last year, totalling around 162.2 thousand (16.4% of the total), while those by residents abroad rose by 11.2%, reaching 826.6 thousand. It should be noted that compared to October 2019, the change in overnight stays by residents in Portugal was +101.8%, while for those generated by residents abroad, it was +36.4%. In October 2023, guests with residence in the country totalled 45.8 thousand, and those with residence abroad amounted to 148.3 thousand.
In the country, in October 2023, foreign markets grew by 11.5%, with 5.5 million overnight stays recorded. Overnight stays by residents slightly reversed the declining trend of the previous four months, totalling 1.8 million (+0.3% year-on-year). By region, Alentejo recorded the highest growth (+13.8%), and the Autonomous Region of the Azores, the lowest (+4.3%).

The first estimated data in the region for the reference month show that the issuing markets of residents abroad accounted for 83.6% of the total overnight stays. In this set, the German market recorded the most overnight stays in October 2023, with approximately 209.9 thousand (+10.4% compared to the same month last year), followed by the United Kingdom with 202.5 thousand (-1.1%), and France with 66.0 thousand (+13.1%).
In October 2023, 9.2% of tourist accommodation establishments were closed or did not record guest activity.
