Flash Estimate - In February 2024, the tourist accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira recorded a year-on-year increase of 8.6% in the overnight stays
According to the preliminary data for the tourist accommodation sector in the Region, for the month of February 2024, it is estimated that 147.1 thousand guests arrived, generating 784.8 thousand overnight stays, reflecting year-on-year changes of +5.1% and +8.6%, respectively.
The cumulative values of guests arriving for the period from January to February 2024 (265.5 thousand; +1.5% compared to the same period in 2023) also show growth, as do the overnight stays, which exceeded 1.4 million (+4.2% compared to the same months in 2023).
For the purpose of comparability with the data released by Statistics Portugal (INE), it is necessary to exclude local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds. According to this method of calculating results, overnight stays in tourist accommodation in February 2024 showed a year-on-year growth of 4.9%, a positive change similar to that observed nationally (+6.4%).
In the Region, in the reference month, overnight stays by residents of Portugal increased by 1.3% compared to the same month last year, reaching around 116.9 thousand (14.9% of the total), while those by residents abroad increased by 10.0%, totalling 667.9 thousand. Guests arriving in February 2024 with residence in the country totalled 35.0 thousand, and those with residence abroad totalled 112.1 thousand.
In the country, in February 2024, the slowdown in the growth of external markets observed in the last three months was countered, with a year-on-year change of 8.1%, with 2.9 million overnight stays recorded in these markets. Overnight stays by residents totalled 1.4 million, showing a positive change of 3.1%. The largest increases in overnight stays were recorded in Oeste e Vale do Tejo region (+17.2%), followed by the Autonomous Region of the Azores (+14.0%), the Peninsula de Setúbal (+9.1%), and Norte (+8.5%). Modest growth was observed in Centro (+1.7%) and Alentejo (+1.5%).

The first estimated data for the reference month in the Region show that foreign resident source markets accounted for 85.1% of total overnight stays. Within this group, the UK market recorded the highest number of overnight stays in February 2024, with around 170.6 thousand (+8.5% compared to the same month last year), followed by Germany, with 156.5 thousand (+5.3%), and France, with 37.2 thousand (-8.5%).
In February 2024, 13.9% of tourist accommodation establishments were either closed or did not register guest movements.
