Flash Estimate - In November 2024, the tourist accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira recorded a year-on-year increase of 12.3% in overnight stays
According to the preliminary data for the tourist accommodation sector in the Region, for November 2024, it is estimated that 164.6 thousand guests arrived, generating 892.5 thousand overnight stays, reflecting positive year-on-year changes of 11.5% and 12.3%, respectively.
The cumulative figures of guest arrivals for the period from January to November 2024 (2 078.7 thousand; +6.2% compared to the same period in 2023) also demonstrate growth, as did the overnight stays, which surpassed 10.9 million (+6.8% compared to the same period of 2023).
For comparability with data released by Statistics Portugal (INE), it is necessary to exclude local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds. Following this criterion, overnight stays in tourist accommodation in November 2024 showed a year-on-year increase of 8.2%, slightly below the national average increase (+9.8%).
In the Region, overnight stays by residents of Portugal increased by 55.3% compared to the same month last year, amounting to approximately 148.1 thousand (16.6% of the total), while those by residents abroad increased by 6.4%, reaching 744.4 thousand. Additionally, in November, guests with residence in the country totalled 38.1 thousand, and those from abroad numbered 126.5 thousand.
At the national level, overnight stays by residents saw a rise (+22.2%), amounting to 1.7 million, while those by non-residents increased more modestly (+4.6%), totalling 3.4 million.
All regions experienced growth in overnight stays, with the most significant increases recorded in Centro (+24.6%), Península de Setúbal (+19.3%), Norte (+18.3%), and the Azores (+16.4%). Grande Lisboa (+4.1%) and Algarve (+3.4%) posted the most modest gains.

The preliminary estimated data in the Region for the reference month show that the emitting markets of residents abroad represented 83.4% of the total overnight stays. Within this group, in November 2024, the German market recorded the highest number of overnight stays, with approximately 206.2 thousand (+7.7% compared to the same month last year), followed by the United Kingdom, with 166.6 thousand (-2.3%) and France, with 30.5 thousand (+3.2%).
