[Note: Regarding the monthly dissemination of data for the reference year 2025, the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) is aligned with Statistics Portugal (INE) in the simultaneous release of the full set of variables concerning tourist accommodation, now carried out at the end of month n+1. While, for 2024, such dissemination already occurred within this timeframe for guests and overnight stays, the publication of results for occupancy rates and revenue indicators was only available 45 days after the reference period. From 2025 onwards, a single release moment per month is in place, with the data being preliminary in nature. Moreover, DREM continues to publish an aggregate comprising hotels, rural tourism and all local accommodation, regardless of bed capacity. INE, by contrast, excludes local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds. Consequently, in this release, in Em Foco, and in the statistical tables published by DREM, the overall totals of guests and overnight stays are higher than those of INE. However, regarding occupancy rates, rooms, revenues and staff costs, the figures are identical to those of INE, as their compilation excludes local accommodation establishments with fewer than 10 beds.]

In September 2025

Overnight stays in tourist accommodation in the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased by 8.2% year-on-year

In the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), the tourist accommodation recorded 228.6 thousand guests, generating 1 187.7 thousand overnight stays, corresponding to year-on-year increases of 10.2% and 8.2%, respectively.

The hotel sector accounted for 65.9% of the total overnight stays in September 2025 (782.5 thousand), representing a 2.3% increase year-on-year, while local accommodation (31.8% of the total) and rural tourism (2.3%) registered rises of 23.2% and 4.8%, respectively.

For comparability with Statistics Portugal (INE) data, local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds must be excluded. Under this methodology, overnight stays in tourist accommodation grew 2.3% compared with September 2024 , a higher rate than that observed at the national average (+0.7%).

Among the nine NUTS 2 regions, the largest year-on-year increases in overnight stays were recorded in Alentejo (+8.0%) and Península de Setúbal (+3.6%). Conversely, Centro (-2.4%), Algarve (-2.2%), and Azores (-1.5%) registered decreases.

The net bed occupancy rate in the ARM stood at 74.7%, an increase of 0.4 percentage points (pp) compared with the same month of the previous year (74.3%). The room occupancy rate reached 85.8%, compared with 85.2% in September 2024.

In September 2025, the average length of stay in tourist accommodation was 4.67 nights (4.72 nights in September 2024). The highest values were observed in hotels (4.79 nights) and local accommodation (4.53 nights), followed by rural tourism, which recorded the lowest average stay (3.55 nights).

From January to September 2025, the two main international source markets displayed opposite year-on-year trends: the German market increased by 0.2%, while the British market declined by 1.9%. The domestic market (residents in Portugal), the second most important during this period, recorded the most significant increase, +40.3% year-on-year.

In September 2025, total revenue and accommodation revenue increased by 16.7% and 19.0%, reaching 89.5 million euros and 65.7 million euros, respectively. At the national level, both indicators also showed positive year-on-year changes (+5.6% and +5.8%).

Cumulatively, between January and September 2025, total and accommodation revenues rose by 19.1% and 20.4%, amounting to 690.5 million euros and 500.1 million euros, respectively.
