DREM releases the final results of Tourism Statistics for the year 2014 and updates the respective Time Series (1976-2014)
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today, on its official statistics website, the final results of Tourism Statistics for the year 2014 and at the same time updates the Time Series (1976-2014) for thisstatistical area. The tables with data for 2014 were also updated.
The annual publication contains a summary of the main results, from where the following was extracted:
- In 2014, the number of overnight stays stood at 6.6 million (+5.1% than in 2013). The residents in Portugal originated a total of 726.7 thousand overnight stays (+10.5%), while non-residents accounted for 5.8 million (+4.5%).
- In hotel establishments, there were increases in overnight stays (+4.1%), total revenue (+7.8%) and lodging revenue (+6.7%).
- The main markets were Germany (24.1% of the total bednights), UK (23.1%) and France (10.7%). The Portuguese were responsible for 10.7% of the total overnight stays, but remained as the fourth main market, despite the 9.5% growth. The German market rose by 8.0% and the British market by 6.2%.
- The annual net bed-occupancy rate stood at 60.9%, up by 1.6 percentage points from 2013.
- The average length of stay decreased from 5.6 to 5.5 nights between 2013 and 2014.
- The revenue per available room (RevPAR) was 36.68€ (up by 5.3% from 2013).
- In rural tourism, the main indicators were positive. Bednights grew by 13.2% while total revenue rose by 16.8% and lodging revenue by 16.2%.
-The indicators of the local accommodation establishments showed a very pronounced growth in 2014, with bednights increasing by 44.3% to a total of 206,706.
- The data from the Golf Course Survey show that in 2014, the number of rounds played in the three golf courses of the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 43,929 (-5.2% compared to 2013). This activity generated 1.7 million Euros (-1.2%). 60.4% of those rounds were played by non-members, mainly coming from Nordic countries, Germany and the UK. 39.2% of the total rounds were sold by the golf courses themselves, 31.2% by tour operators and the remaining 29.6% by hotel establishments and similar.
- According to the data provided by the Port’s authority, 473,415 transit passengers aboard cruise ships were counted in 2014, increasing slightly by 0.2% when compared to the previous year. The number of cruise ships that visited Madeira dropped by 1.0% (down by three ships).
