In January 2016

Madeira’s Hotel Industry recorded a double digit year-on-year growth in overnight stays and total revenue

Initial estimates for January 2016 show increases in the tourism indicators with positive year-on-year rates of change in overnight stays (+10.8%), total revenue (+14.8%) and lodging revenue (+19.0%).

At the country level, the rates of change stood at 10.7% in nights spent, 13.0% in total revenue and 15.1% in revenue from accommodation.

In the month of reference, the number of overnight stays in the Autonomous Region of Madeira topped 421,3 thousand – a new monthly record for January. The total revenue and the revenue from accommodation also registered new maximums (19.6 and 12.9 million euros, respectively).

Looking at the data broken down by market, it should be highlighted that the year-on-year change rates in nights spent by the Portuguese and foreign tourists  were +23.6% and +9.6%, respectively, compared to January 2015.

The bed occupancy rate in the reference month reached 50.9%, up by 5.0 percentage points over the same month of the previous year and the highest among the seven NUTS2 Portuguese regions.

The average income per room (RevPAR) recorded a year-on-year change rate of +17.7%, increasing to € 31.92.
