Most of the culture indicators showed growth compared to 2016
DREM releases today on its website the time series on Culture, Sport and Recreation updated with information for 2017. It should be highlighted that new data was included in this series.
In 2017, the 19 museums in the Autonomous Region of Madeira which met the eligibility criteria of the Museums Survey displayed 97 thousand goods and had 263 thousand visitors, up by 14.7% from 2016. 60.6% of the visitors were foreign (159 thousand) and 12.9% were integrated in school groups.
Data collected from the art galleries and other temporary exhibition spaces survey show that 305 exhibitions (up by 38.0% from 2016) with 8,921 pieces (7,766 in 2016) took place in the 31 spaces in activity in Madeira.
In the reference year, 27 periodic publications were counted in Madeira having been released a total of 4.6 million copies (up by 4.1% from 2016).
In 2017, there were 18,011 cinema exhibitions in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, a 0.1% increase over the previous year. The number of spectators in 2017 went up by 6.2% and stood at approximately 292 thousand, with ticket revenues amounting to 1.5 million euros, a 8.9% increase over the year 2016.
Last year, 1,521 live shows were performed, with a total of 325.2 thousand spectators, of which 55.2 thousand paid for the ticket, generating receipts of 604 thousand euros. Compared to 2016, the number of shows, spectators, tickets sold and revenue increased by 58.9%, 86.8%, 44.3% and 155.9%, respectively.
In the botanic gardens and aquariums of Region 712.5 thousand visitors were counted in 2017, the majority of which originating from foreign countries (90.8%). The number of visitors rose by 7.0% from the previous year.
According to the 2017 “Survey on Financing of cultural, recreation and sports activities by the local administration” the percentage of expenditure by the local administration of Madeira in cultural and sports activities stood at 5.3%, up by 0.2 percentage points from the previous year. Of the 9.6 million spent in cultural and sports activities, 75.3% was destined for culture and 24.7% for sport.
