In 2020
Number of performances, spectators and revenue decreased in the Autonomous Region of Madeira’s cinemas due to the pandemic
According to the provisional data made available by the Institute for Cinema and Audiovisuals (ICA), 7,662 performances were recorded in the cinemas of the Autonomous Region of Madeira in 2020, a 55.8% decrease over 2019.
The number of spectators stood at 70,471, down by 74.8% and the box office revenue reached 367.1 thousand euros, a 74.4% decrease compared to the 2019.
These results are associated with the closure of cinemas in the Autonomous Region of Madeira during the 2nd quarter of 2020 and the capacity limit of the theaters since July 2020, following government measures (national and regional) to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.
In fact, the number of performances, of spectators and revenue generated by the cinemas in the 4th quarter 2020 dropped by 48.3%, 80.3% e 80.0% year-on-year.
