According to the provisional data made available by the Institute for Cinema and Audiovisual (ICA), 5 715 film sessions in the cinemas of the Autonomous Region of Madeira were recorded in the first nine months of 2021, representing a 3.5% increase compared to the same period in 2020.

For public health reasons - Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic - on the 18th of March 2020, a state of emergency was declared in Portugal, through the Decree of the President of the Republic no. 14-A / 2020, of 18th March, regulated by Decree no. 2-A / 2020. The resulting restrictions had an impact on the lives of citizens, including mobility and social contacts. The statistical data regarding cinema registered from March 2020 should be analysed in this context, knowing that, in the 2nd quarter of 2020 and in the months of February and March 2021, the cinemas in the Autonomous Region of Madeira were closed.
