Relief of measures related to the pandemic increased the number of sessions, spectators, and revenue in the Region's cinemas

According to the provisional data made available by the Institute for Cinema and Audiovisuals (ICA), 8 772 performances were recorded in the cinemas of the Autonomous Region of Madeira in 2021, a 14.2% increase over 2020. August was the month that recorded the highest number of sessions (15.4% of total).

The number of spectators also increased in 2021, having reached 99,114, up by 40.5% and the box office revenue reached 525.5 thousand euros, a 43.0% increase compared to 2020. December was the month with the highest number of spectators in the Region's cinema sessions (17,892 spectators, 18.1% of the annual figure).

These annual increases are associated with the relief of measures taken by the regional government as part of the containment of the COVID pandemic, even though the cinemas in the Autonomous Region of Madeira were closed in February and March 2021. However, the figures recorded in 2021, only exceed those of 2020 and are the second lowest since the beginning of the century.
