Number of sessions, spectators and revenue increased in the cinemas of the Autonomous Region of Madeira

According to the provisional data made available by the Institute for Cinema and Audiovisual (ICA), 9,911 film sessions in the cinemas of the Autonomous Region of Madeira were recorded in the first nine months of 2022, representing a 73.3% increase compared to the same period in 2021.

The number of spectators stood at 115,565, up by 96.7% year-on-year, while the box office revenue rose to 613 thousand euros, a 97.9% increase compared to the same period of the previous year.

It should be recalled that following the COVID-19 pandemic containment measures, cinemas in the Region closed during February and March 2021, which was undoubtedly reflected in the above changes for the first nine months of 2022.

In any case, the figures for the first nine months of 2022 are still far from the same period of 2019, with the number of sessions, spectators and revenue being 25.0%, 45.8% and 43.9% below that benchmark, respectively.

According to the analysis of the 3^rd quarter of 2022, it is noted that 3,612 sessions were registered in this period, down by 45 over the same period of 2021. On the other hand, there was an increase of 13.6% in the number of spectators and 14.5% in revenue.
