Number of sessions, spectators, and revenue in cinemas increased in the Region compared to the previous year but stood below 2019

According to the provisional data made available by the Institute for Cinema and Audiovisuals (ICA), 12,953 performances were recorded in the cinemas of the Autonomous Region of Madeira in 2022, a 47.5% increase over 2021. August was the month that recorded the highest number of sessions (9.9% of the total).

The number of spectators also increased in 2022, having reached 157,037, up by 58,2% compared to 2021. July was the month with the highest number of spectators in the Region's cinema sessions (21,156 spectators, 13,5% of the annual figure).

In turn, the box office revenue reached 847.8 thousand euros, an increase of 322.0 thousand euros (+61.3%) over the previous year.

Despite the increase compared to 2021, the sessions, spectators and revenues were lower than in 2019 by 25.3%, 43.7% and 40.8%, respectively.
