In the 1st quarter of 2026

Number of bankruptcy, insolvency and enterprise recovery cases filed in the first-instance courts of the Madeira District decreased quarter-on-quarter and increased year-on-year

According to information supplied by the Directorate-General for Justice Policy (DGPJ), the number of incoming cases filed in the Madeira District relating to bankruptcy, insolvency and enterprise recovery decreased from 57, in the 4th quarter of 2025, to 48 proceedings, in the 1st quarter of 2026 (-15.8%). Compared with the same quarter the previous year (42 proceedings), an increase of 14.3% was observed.

In the 1st quarter of 2026, 62 proceedings were concluded (+51.2% compared with the 1st quarter of 2025), 53 (85.5%) of which ended in bankruptcy or insolvency being declared. This number of bankruptcies/insolvencies was higher than that recorded in the previous quarter (49) and the same quarter the previous year (37), corresponding to changes of +8.2% and +43.2%, respectively.

Regarding the type of person involved in the bankruptcies/insolvencies declared, natural persons predominated, accounting for 62.3% of the total number of cases. Indeed, of the 53 bankruptcies/insolvencies declared in this quarter, 33 involved natural persons and 20 involved legal persons.
