Number of accidents at work in the Region decreased by 3.2% compared with 2023

According to data made available by the Regional Directorate for Labour, in 2024 there were 4 181 accidents at work in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), 3.2% fewer (-139 accidents) than in 2023. Of the accidents recorded in 2024, 5 were fatal, 2 more than in the previous year.

The "Construction" section accounted for the largest number of accidents (22.1% of the total), followed by "Accommodation, food and beverage service activities" with 16.0% and "Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles" with 14.5%. The "Manufacturing" section recorded, in absolute terms, the largest increase compared with 2023 (55 more accidents). In contrast, the "Construction" section recorded the largest decrease, with 116 fewer accidents (-11.2% compared with 2023).

By sex and age group, it can be observed that, in 2024, most accidents occurred among men (70.6% of the total) and among persons aged between 35 and 54 (51.8%). By occupational group, "Building and related trades workers, excluding electricians" (654 accidents; 15.6% of the total) and "Refuse workers and other elementary workers" (486 accidents; 11.6%) recorded the highest number of casualties.

Regarding the type of accident location, 20.2% of accidents occurred in "Industrial area" (845 accidents), 19.1% in "Site of tertiary-sector activity, office, entertainment, miscellaneous" (798 accidents) and 18.1% in "Construction site, quarry, open-cast mine" (756 accidents). The cause of most accidents was "Bodily movement under physical stress" (27.7% of total accidents; 1 157).

The main occurrences causing injury were "Physical bodily stress, mental stress" (25.6% of the total; 1 069 accidents) and "Crushing in a vertical or horizontal movement against/onto a stationary object" (17.7%; 740 accidents), together accounting for 43.3% of recorded occurrences.

Regarding the consequences of accidents, it can be seen that "Wounds and superficial injuries" and "Dislocations, sprains and strains" were the most prevalent injuries, accounting for 46.2% and 34.0% of the total, respectively, in 2024. About 3 in 5 accidents affected the "Upper extremities" or the "Lower extremities" (34.7% and 27.3%, respectively).

Regarding the number of days of absence from work, it should be noted that 26.8% of non-fatal accidents did not result in any absence from work. A total of 128 805 working days were lost due to workplace accidents, with the 7 to 13 days' absence interval standing out, accounting for 17.0% of total non-fatal accidents. The largest number of working days lost due to workplace accidents occurred in the "Construction" section (36 585 days; 28.4% of total days lost), followed by accidents recorded in "Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles" (16 578 days; 12.9% of total days lost).

On average, 31 working days were lost per workplace accident, with the "Information and communication activities" section recording the highest average (42 days per accident), followed by "Agriculture, animal production, hunting, forestry and fishing" and "Construction" (both with 40 days per accident).
