Estimated unemployment rate decreased to 7.3% in the Autonomous Region of Madeira
The Labour Force Survey results, for the 3rd quarter of 2021, indicate that the unemployment rate for the Autonomous Region of Madeira was estimated at 7.3%. This value decreased by 1.1 percentage points (pp) when compared with the previous quarter and by 1.8 pp from the same quarter of last year. This is the lowest value of the last 5 quarters, exceeding by 0.3 pp the value recorded in the 2nd quarter of 2020. Compared to 3rd quarter of 2019 (pre-pandemic COVID-19 period), the decrease was of 0.1 pp.
The estimated unemployed population in the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 9.5 thousand persons, dropping by 19.9% from the same quarter of last year (2.3 thousand) and by 11.2%, compared with the previous quarter (1.2 thousand).
The employment rate of the population was estimated at 120.9 thousand persons, representing a year-on-year increase of 2.3% (2.7 thousand) and a quarterly rise of 3.6% (4.2 thousand).
The activity rate of working-age people (aged 16 to 89), in the 3rd quarter of 2021, was estimated at 60.0%, a similar value to the same quarter of last year and up by 1.3 pp from the previous quarter. The activity rate for women was 55.9%, lower than that of men (64.9%) by 9.0 pp. Compared to 3rd quarter of 2019, the decline was 0.2 pp.
The inactive population stood at 122.9 thousand persons in the reference quarter, decreasing by 0.9% quarter-on-quarter and 2.4% from the previous quarter.
The unemployment rate for Portugal stood at 6.1%, down by 0.6 pp from the previous quarter and by 1.9 pp from the same quarter of the previous year.
The Autonomous Regions of the Azores (6.9%) and Madeira (7.3%) recorded the highest unemployment rates in the reference quarter, with Centro (5.3%) having the lowest rate. In five of the 7 NUTS2 regions of the country, the unemployment rate decreased in quarterly terms, with the largest falls being registered in Algarve (-4.4 pp) and in Alentejo (-2.1 pp). In the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon, the unemployment rate remained the same as in the previous quarter, while the Autonomous Region of Azores was the only region where there was a quarterly increase (0.1 pp). In year-on-year terms, the rate of unemployment decreased in all regions of the country, except in the Autonomous Region of Azores which had an increase of 0.1 pp. The Metropolitan Area of Lisbon was the region with the largest rate of change (-2.8 pp).
