In the 4th quarter of 2022

Unemployment rate in the Autonomous Region of Madeira was estimated at 6.9%, and the annual average stood at 7.0%

The results of the Labour Force Survey, for the 4th quarter of 2022, show that the unemployment rate in the Autonomous Region of Madeira was estimated at 6.9%. This indicator increased by 0.7 percentage points (pp) compared to the previous quarter and by 0.3 pp over the same quarter last year.  Compared to the 4th quarter of 2019 (pre-pandemic COVID-19 period), the decrease was of 0.5 pp.

The unemployment rate for 2022 (average) in the Autonomous Region of Madeira was 7.0%, down by 0.9 pp from 2020. This is the lowest value since the beginning of the time series in 2011.

The estimated number of unemployed persons in the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 9.2 thousand, increasing by 8.3% from the same quarter of last year (about 700 persons) and by 10.3% compared to the previous quarter (about 900 persons). For this indicator, the average for 2022 was 9.2 thousand persons.

The number of employed persons was estimated at 123.2 thousand persons, representing a year-on-year increase of 2.4% (2.8 thousand) and a quarterly decrease of 1.6% (2.0 thousand). Of the employed population, 14.3 thousand persons worked from home (13.3% of female employees and 10.0% of male employees).

The activity rate of working-age people (aged 16 to 89), in the 4th quarter of 2022, was estimated at 60.7%, 1.4 pp higher than in the same quarter of last year and 0.6 pp lower than the previous quarter. The activity rate for women was 55.3%, 11.8 pp lower than that of men (67.1%).

The inactive population stood at 120.4 thousand persons in the reference quarter, decreasing by 3.3% from the same quarter of last year and increasing by 1.0% from the previous quarter.

In Portugal, the unemployment rate was 6.5%, in the quarter under review, 0.7 pp higher than in the previous quarter and 0.2 pp higher than in the same quarter last year. The annual average rate in 2022 was 6.0%, which represents a drop of 0.6 pp compared to 2021.

In the reference quarter, Área Metropolitana de Lisboa (7.6%), the Autonomous Region of Madeira (6.9%), Norte (6,8%) and Algarve (6.3%) had the highest unemployment rates, while Centro (5.3%), the Autonomous Region of the Azores and Alentejo (both with 5.5%) had the lowest values. The unemployment rate had a quarterly decline only in the Autonomous Region of the Azores (-0.5 pp). Área Metropolitana de Lisboa maintained the same value as in the previous quarter and the Algarve was the region that recorded the largest quarterly increase (+1.9 pp), followed by Alentejo (+1.2%).

On an annual basis, the unemployment rate decreased in the Autonomous Region of the Azores (-2.7 pp),  Algarve (-0.6 pp) and Centre (-0.2 pp). In the remaining regions, Área Metropolitana de Lisboa maintained the same value as in the 4th quarter of 2021, while Norte and the Autonomous Region of Madeira were the ones that showed increases (both with +0.3 pp).

On an annual basis, the unemployment rate in 2022 increased only in Área Metropolitana de Lisboa (+0.4 pp) standing at 7.2%. In the remaining regions, the rate decreased compared to 2021, with the sharpest drop happening in Algarve (-2.5 pp to 5.7%). Área Metropolitana de Lisboa was the region with the highest rate in 2022 (7.2%) followed by the Autonomous Region of Madeira (7.0%) and the Autonomous Region of the Azores (6.0%). Alentejo (4.8%) and Centre (5.1%) were the regions that had the lowest rates.
