31.1% of respondents indicated that they spent the entirety or the majority of their working time using digital devices

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) is releasing today the results of the 2022 ad hoc module of the Labour Force Survey - "Job Skills" - related to the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM).

The ad hoc module "Job skills" was carried out simultaneously with the Labour Force Survey throughout the year of 2022, focusing on a subsample of persons aged 16 to 74 who were either employed or, if not employed, had left their previous job within the past two years. The target population corresponded to 132.4 thousand persons.

The module focused on collecting information regarding the time spent using specific skills by persons in their professional activities, analysing results regarding the types of tasks performed (cognitive, manual, and social), the use of digital devices, and the adopted work methods.

Around 12.1% of respondents indicated spending at least half of their work time reading technical documents, and 10.4% on relatively complex calculations. At the national level, proportions of 13.5% and 9.2% were recorded, respectively.

Within the target population, 33.1% of respondents indicated dedicating most of their professional time to strenuous physical work, and 17.8% to tasks requiring manual dexterity. Nationally, these figures stood at 26.1% for strenuous physical work and 15.2% for manual dexterity.

Out of the total, 15.6% indicated not spending any time interacting on work-related matters with internal persons within the organisation they work for, and 28.9% with external persons. However, 35.3% of respondents indicated doing so either half or all of their work time with internal persons and 34.8% with external persons. Nationally, the absence of internal interaction was reported by 10.0% of respondents, and the absence of external interaction by 25.3%. Interaction at least half of the time with internal persons was reported by 31.0% of respondents, and interaction with external persons by 31.8%.

Concerning the use of digital devices for professional purposes, 31.1% of respondents indicated spending the entirety or the majority of their time working using these devices, which is lower than the national average (36.6%).

Regarding work methods, 53.2% of respondents stated that their work always or almost always involves repetitive tasks, and 40.8% involve standardized tasks. In the country, these responses were the choice of 29.8% and 26.0% of respondents, respectively.
