In 2025
Lowest number of unemployed persons in the last decade was reached

The indicators released by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) and the Instituto de Emprego da Madeira, IP-RAM (IEM, IP-RAM, Employment Institute of Madeira) show a downward trend in unemployment in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) since the post-pandemic period. In 2025, both sources recorded the lowest figures of the last decade.

According to the results of the Labour Force Survey made available by DREM, the estimated number of unemployed persons stood at 7.5 thousand in 2025. In turn, the IEM, IP-RAM recorded around 5.7 thousand unemployed persons registered at the Instituto de Emprego da Madeira. The difference between these figures results from the use of distinct counting criteria, explained in the infographics below.

The data by sex show a significant change in the composition of regional unemployment over the last decade. Until 2017, men consistently accounted for a higher number of unemployed persons than women. This trend reversed from 2018 onwards in the IEM, IP-RAM records, and from 2019 onwards in DREM data, with women becoming the majority of the unemployed in both statistical sources. In 2025, women accounted for 57.3% of the total number of unemployed persons estimated by DREM and for 54.5% of the unemployed persons registered with the IEM, IP-RAM.
