Births decreased while marriages and deaths increased

The final results of the demographic statistics for 2016 show that the Autonomous Region of Madeira registered a natural decrease of 754 persons (-664 in 2015).

In 2016, 1,858 live births to mothers living in RAM were recorded, corresponding to an decrease of 4.6% compared to the previous year. The sex ratio at birth was 108% revealing the prevalence of the male gender. 33.7% of the live births belonged to mothers under 30 years of age and 32.5% to mothers aged between 30 and 34 years old.

The number of registered deaths in 2016 (2,612) was smaller than in the previous year (2,611). 94.1% of the deceased persons aged 50 or more and 63.1% were above 75 years old. December was the month with the highest number of deaths (270), while the lowest value was registered in October (171 deaths).

In the year of reference, 5 deaths under 1 year and seven dead fetuses were registered. The infant mortality rate in 2016 was 2.7‰ (3.6‰ in 2015).

861 marriages were counted in 2016, an increase of 68 compared to 2016. Only 2.1% were same sex marriages. The highest number of marriages was registered in September (113) and the lowest in January (40).
