Return of emigrants in Venezuela contributed to the 10.0% increase in the foreign population residing in the Autonomous Region of Madeira
The data provided by the Immigration and Borders Service (SEF) indicate that on the 31st of December of 2016, the foreign population with resident status in the Autonomous Region of Madeira totalled 6,720 (up by 10.0% from 2016), distributed between residence permits (6, 692) and long-stay visas (28).
The Venezuelan (14.4%), British (14.2%), Brazilian (12.1%), and German (7.0%) nationalities constitute the largest foreign communities residing in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
The Venezuelan nationality had a sharp increase (38.0%) in the number of foreigners residing in the Region holding a residence permit (703 in 2016 and 970 in 2017).
In terms of geographical distribution, it is in Funchal that the foreign population mainly concentrates (59.2% of the total of the Region), followed by Santa Cruz (13.8%), Calheta (7.3%) and Porto Santo (4. 0%). By gender, the share of females (51.1%) is slightly higher than the proportion of males (48.9%).
