Natural decrease of the population stood at 1,130 persons

Preliminary data of demographic statistics show that in 2021 the Autonomous Region of Madeira registered a natural decrease of -1,130 persons since the number of live births in this period (1,744) was lower than the number of deaths (2,874). In 2020, the natural change had also been negative, with the live births dropping by 6.2% and the number of deaths increasing by 5.9% (-853 persons, the difference between 1,860 live births, and 2,713 deaths). The year 2021 registered the highest natural decrease since 1970, the starting point of the available time series.

In 2021, the number of births was the second lowest in history, being the first in 2014 with1,739 births and the number of deaths was the second highest ever, surpassed only by the deaths registered in 1971 (2,905).

In 2021, 5 deaths under 1 year and 6 dead foetuses were reported. In 2020, the number of deaths under 1 year (6 deaths) was slightly higher and the number of dead foetuses (5 dead fetuses) was lower.

In the period of reference, 866 marriages took place in the registry offices of the Region, up by 254 (41.5%) from 2020, but down by 100 marriages compared to 2019.
