Number of deaths increased by 6.2% compared to the same month in the previous year, while the number of live births decreased by 1.4%
In October 2023, 258 deaths were recorded in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), a figure higher than that observed in October 2022 (an increase of 15 deaths or 6.2%). In the first ten months of the year, there were 2,366 deaths, which is 218 fewer than in the same period last year (a decrease of 8.4%).
The assessment of "excess mortality," comparing the deaths in the reference month with the average values for the same month from 2016 to 2019, shows an excess mortality of 35.4%. This reflects the fact that, over those years, the number of deaths was always lower than the value recorded in October 2023.
During this period, one fetus was recorded, and there were no deaths under the age of 1.
Also, in October 2023, there were 145 live births, representing a decrease of 1.4% compared to the same month in 2022 (a decrease of 2 births). The total number of live births recorded in the first ten months of 2023 (1,422) was lower than that in the same period in 2022 (1,443), a decrease of 1.5% (21 fewer live births).
The difference between live births and deaths resulted in a negative natural balance of 113 persons in October 2023, which is more unfavourable than in the same month of the previous year, where it was -96. In the first ten months of 2023, the cumulative value of the natural balance was -944, showing an improvement compared to the same period in 2022 (-1,141).
In the tenth month of 2023, 115 marriages were celebrated, representing an increase of 6.5% compared to the number of marriages in October 2022 (an increase of 7 marriages).
