In February 2024
Number of deaths decreased by 12.4% compared to the same month in the previous year, while the number of live births declined by 6.8%
In February 2024, in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, there were 205 deaths recorded, which is 29 fewer deaths than in February 2023 (a decrease of 12.4%). From January to February, a total of 447 deaths occurred, representing 78 fewer deaths compared to the same period in the previous year (a decline of 14.9%).
An assessment of “excess mortality”—which compares the deaths in the reference month (205 deaths) with the average values for the same month from 2016 to 2019 (an average of 239 deaths)—reveals a 14.2% deficit in mortality. This reflects the fact that, over those years, the number of deaths was consistently higher than the observed value in February 2024.
During this period, there were no deaths recorded for persons under 1 year old or stillborn foetuses.
Additionally, in February 2024, there were 124 live births, indicating a 6.8% decrease compared to the same month in 2023 (with 9 fewer births). The total number of live births in the first 2 months of 2024 (271) was 7.5% lower than the corresponding period in 2023 (with 22 fewer live births).
The difference between live births and deaths resulted in a negative natural balance of 81 persons in February 2024. However, this was less severe than the previous year’s February, which had a balance of -101. For the first 2 months of 2024, the cumulative natural balance was -176, showing an improvement compared to the same period in 2023 (-232).
Furthermore, in the second month of 2024, 51 marriages were celebrated, representing a 2.0% increase compared to the number of marriages in February 2023 (with 1 additional marriage). From January to February, the total number of marriages remained the same as in the previous year.
