In May 2024
Number of deaths decreased by 6.7% compared to the same month in the previous year, while the number of live births increased by 2.8%
In May 2024, 196 deaths were recorded in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), a figure lower than that observed in May 2023 (a decrease of 14 deaths; -6.7%). Over the first five months of the year, there were 1 078 deaths, representing a drop of 127 compared to the same period last year, equating to a -10.5% decrease.
The assessment of "excess mortality," which compares the deaths in the reference month (196 deaths) with the average values for the same month from 2016 to 2019 (an average of 212 deaths), shows a mortality deficit of 7.3%. This reflects the fact that, in those years, the number of deaths was always higher than the figure recorded in May 2024.

Additionally, in May 2024, there were 145 live births, representing a 2.8% increase, that is, four more births than in May 2023. The total number of live births recorded in the first five months of 2024 (696) was 2.0% lower than that recorded in the same period of 2023 (-14 live births).
The difference between live births and deaths resulted in a negative natural balance of 51 persons in May 2024 (-69 one year before). In the first five months of 2024, the cumulative value of the natural balance was -382, showing an improvement compared to the same period in 2023 (‑495).
