In October 2024
Number of deaths decreased by 27.9% compared to the same month in the previous year, while the number of live births increased by 18.5%
In October 2024, 186 deaths were recorded in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), a figure lower than that observed in the same month of 2023 (72 fewer deaths; -27.9%). From January to October, a total of 2 147 deaths were registered, which is 221 fewer than in the corresponding period of the previous year (-9.3%).
The assessment of "excess mortality," which compares the deaths in the reference month (186 deaths) with the average values for the same month from 2016 to 2019 (191 deaths on average), indicates a deficit mortality of 2.4%. This reflects the fact that, during those years, the number of deaths was almost consistently higher than the value recorded in October 2024.
In October 2024, no deaths under 1 year of age nor stillbirths were recorded.
Additionally, in October 2024, there were 173 live births, corresponding to a rise of 18.5% compared to the same month of 2023 (27 more live births). The total number of live births recorded in the first ten months of 2024 (1 481) was 4.1% higher than that recorded in the same period of 2023 (58 more live births).
The difference between live births and deaths resulted in a negative natural balance of 13 persons in October 2024, which is less severe than in the same month of the previous year, when the balance stood at -112. In the first ten months of 2024, the cumulative value of the natural balance was -666, showing an improvement compared to the same period in 2023 (‑945).
In the tenth month of 2024, 132 marriages were celebrated, an increase of 11.9% compared to the number of marriages held in October 2023 (14 more marriages). From January to October 2024, a total of 1 043 marriages were celebrated, 74 more (+7.6%) than in the same period the previous year.
