In April 2025

Natural balance deteriorated year-on-year, due to a higher increase in deaths than in live births

In April 2025, a total of 244 deaths were recorded in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, a figure higher than that observed in April 2024 (32 more deaths; +15.1%). From January to April, a total of 1 032 deaths were registered, 139 more than in the corresponding period of the previous year (+15.6%).

The assessment of “excess mortality,” which compares the number of deaths recorded in the reference month (244 deaths) with the average for the same month from 2016 to 2019 (an average of 224 deaths), indicates an excess mortality rate of 9.2%. This reflects the fact that, across those years, the number of deaths was consistently lower than the value recorded in April 2025.

In April 2025, no deaths under 1 year of age nor stillbirths were recorded.

Also in April 2025, a total of 147 live births were registered, corresponding to an increase of 8.1% compared to the same month in 2024 (11 more births). The total number of live births recorded in the first four months of 2025 stood at 534, which is 4.6% lower than that recorded in the same period of the previous year (-26 live births).

The difference between live births and deaths resulted in a negative natural balance of 97 persons in April 2025, a more pronounced decline than in the same month of the previous year, when the balance was -76. In the first four months of 2025, the cumulative natural balance stood at -498, showing a deterioration compared to that observed in the same period of 2024 (-333).

In the fourth month of 2025, 76 marriages were celebrated, corresponding to a decrease of 2.6% compared to the number of marriages celebrated in April 2024 (two fewer marriages). From January to April 2025, a total of 277 marriages were celebrated, 12 more than in the corresponding period of 2024 (+4.5%).
