Number of deaths rose by 0.9% compared to the same month in the previous year, while the number of live births increased by 6.7%
In July 2025, 232 deaths were recorded in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), a figure higher than that observed in July 2024 (2 more deaths; +0.9%). From January to July, a total of 1 710 deaths were registered, 206 more than in the corresponding period of the previous year (+13.7%).
The assessment of “excess mortality”, which compares the number of deaths in the reference month (232) with the average for the same month in the years 2016 to 2019 (189 deaths on average), indicates a mortality excess of 22.6%, reflecting the fact that, in those years as a whole, the number of deaths was always lower than the value recorded in July 2025.
In July 2025, no deaths under 1 year of age nor stillbirths were recorded.
Also in July 2025, 143 live births were registered, representing a 6.7% increase compared with July 2024 (9 more live births). The total number of live births registered in the first seven months of 2025 (937) was lower than that observed in the same period of 2024 by 5.4% (54 fewer live births).
The difference between live births and deaths resulted in a negative natural balance of 89 persons in July 2025, a less adverse outcome than in the same month of the previous year, when the figure stood at -96. In the first seven months of 2025, the cumulative natural balance amounted to -773, deteriorating compared to the same period of 2024 (-513).
In the seventh month of 2025, 145 marriages were celebrated, corresponding to an increase of 9.8% compared with July 2024 (13 more marriages). From January to July, a total of 669 marriages were registered, 50 more (+8.1%) than in the corresponding period of the previous year.
