In 2014
Population of the Autonomous Region of Madeira maintained downward trend
According to the Resident Population Estimates, 258,686 persons were residing in the Autonomous Region of Madeira on the 31st of December of 2014, which represents a negative change rate of -1.0% from 2013. Of that total, 121,068 were men and 137,618 women. These results mean that the downward trend initiated in 2011 is prolonged for another year.
The drop in the resident population is explained by both the negative balance in net migration (-1,634) and by the negative natural change (-993 persons).
In 2014, the population density of the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 324,4 inhabitants per km2.
In the reference year the proportion of youth population (15 years old and under) represented 15.2% of the total population (15.7% in 2013), while the proportion of the population aged 65 and over rose to 15.2% (14.9% in 2013). The ageing ratio reached 99.8, i.e., 99.8 older persons (65 and +) per 100 young persons (95.0 in 2013).
In 2014, the total fertility rate stood at 0.95 (meaning 0.95 children per woman), below the figure for 2013 (0.98).
