Number of deaths increased by 13.9% compared to the same month of the previous year, and the number of live births rose by 13.1%
In June 2026, 221 deaths were registered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), a figure higher than that recorded in June 2025 (27 more deaths; +13.9%). From January to June, 1 441 deaths were recorded, 38 fewer than in the same period of the previous year (−2 .6%).
The assessment of "excess mortality", which compares the deaths recorded in the reference month (221 deaths) with the average for the same month over the years 2016 to 2019 (201 deaths, on average), shows an excess mortality of 9.8%, reflecting the fact that, across those years, the number of deaths was always lower than the figure recorded in June 2026.
In June 2026, 2 stillbirths were registered and no deaths of infants under 1 year of age were recorded.
Also in June 2026, 138 live births were recorded, representing an increase of 13.1% compared to the same month of 2025 (16 additional births). The total number of live births registered in the first six months of 2026 (867) was 9.1% higher than that recorded in the same period of 2025 (72 additional live births).
The difference between live births and deaths resulted in a negative natural balance of 83 persons in June 2026, a more adverse outcome than in the same month of the previous year, when the figure stood at −72. In the first six months of 2026, the cumulative natural balance stood at −574, representing an improvement compared to the same period of 2025 (−684).
In the sixth month of 2026, 122 marriages were celebrated, representing a decrease of 10.3% compared to the number of marriages celebrated in June 2025 (14 fewer marriages). From January to June, 496 marriages were celebrated, 30 fewer (−5.7%) than in the same period of the previous year.
