DREM releases today on its official website the publication "Health Statistics of the Autonomous Region of Madeira 2021"

This publication presents a compilation of statistical data on health in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM). It is divided into various chapters, including Health Personnel, Hospitals, Pharmacies, Vaccination, Births, and Mortality by Causes of Death. The first chapter focuses on the health status of the population aged 16 and older, utilising data from the Survey on Living Conditions and Income conducted between 2018 and 2021.

The key findings for the year 2021 are as follows:

Health Status Indicators - In 2021, 46.6% of persons aged 16 or older reported their health status as "Very good or Good." 

  • 46.6% of persons aged 16 or older residing in the ARM assessed their health status as "Very good or Good," indicating a 1.9 percentage point (pp) increase compared to 2020.
  • Among residents aged 16 or older, 45.3% reported having a chronic disease or long-term health problem in 2021, representing a 1.8 percentage point (pp) increase compared to 2020.
  • 36.3% of the population of the ARM aged 16 or older experienced limitations in performing activities due to a health problem.
  • 88.5% of children under 16 years old had a "Good" or "Very good" health status.

Health Personnel - Number of doctors, dentists, nurses and pharmacists increased

  • The ARM had a total of 1,271 registered doctors with the Guild in 2021, indicating an increase of 69 doctors (+5.7%) compared to the previous year's count of 1,202 doctors. On average, there were 5.0 doctors per thousand inhabitants in the ARM, an increase from 4.4‰ in 2020.
  • The Professional Order of Dentists in the ARM had a total of 229 registered dentists in 2021, reflecting an increase of 13 dentists compared to 2020. On average, there were 9.1 dentists per 10 thousand inhabitants, a rise from 8.6 in 2020.
  • According to the Portuguese Order of Nurses, there were 2,452 practicing nurses in the ARM in 2021, indicating a 2.9% increase compared to 2020's figure of 2,383 nurses. On average, there were 9.7 nurses per 1,000 inhabitants, slightly higher than the 9.5 nurses per 1,000 inhabitants in 2020.
  • The number of registered pharmacists practicing in the ARM was 265, resulting in an average of 10.5 pharmacists per 10,000 inhabitants. This represents an increase from the previous year's figure of 9.5 pharmacists per 10,000 inhabitants.

Health Establishments:

Hospitals – Generalised growth in the main indicators

  • There were 10 hospitals in the ARM: 3 public and 7 private.
  • A total of 2,077 hospital beds were reported in the ARM, resulting in a ratio of 8.2 beds per 1,000 inhabitants (compared to 8.0 in 2020).
  • At the end of 2021, the healthcare personnel in hospitals in the ARM comprised a total of 5,058 professionals. This included 561 doctors, 1,482 nurses, 336 diagnostic and therapeutic technicians, and 1,537 auxiliary staff members.
  • There were 353.6 thousand medical consultations conducted in the outpatient units of hospitals, indicating a significant increase of 31.3% compared to 2020 (269.3 thousand consultations).
  • The number of hospitalisations reached 25.2 thousand persons (21.5 thousand in 2020), corresponding to a total 572.7 thousand hospitalisation days.
  • On average, approximately 54 surgeries (excluding minor surgeries) were performed per day in hospitals in the ARM, with 33 of them taking place in public hospitals.
  • In the emergency departments of hospitals in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (RAM), a total of 118.3 thousand consultations were conducted, reflecting a 27.9% increase compared to 2020 (92.5 thousand consultations).

Pharmacies - Number of pharmacies remained unchanged

  • There were 65 pharmacies and 1 mobile pharmaceutical unit in the ARM (same as in 2020). On average, the ARM had 26 pharmacies and mobile pharmaceutical units per 100 thousand inhabitants, a similar value to the previous year.

Vaccination - COVID-19 vaccine inoculations in ARM exceeded 466 thousand

  • In ARM, a total of 577,374 inoculations were administered to residents, which represents a significant increase of 393.1% compared to 2020 (117,079 inoculations). Specifically, 466,098 COVID-19 vaccines were administered.
  • Under the Regional Vaccination Plan (PRV), a total of 54,370 inoculations were administered, indicating a slight decrease of 4.8% compared to 2020 (57,129). In the Extra PRV mode, 56,906 inoculations of vaccines other than COVID-19 (Comirnaty) were carried out, representing a decrease of 4.9% compared to the previous year (59,865).
  • In the recommended vaccination schedule for 2021, the vaccination coverage in the ARM for children who completed 1 year of age ranged between 98.7% and 99.5%. There was a slight decrease of 0.3 percentage points (pp) for all vaccines compared to 2020, except for the "Conjugate Vaccine against Streptococcus Pneumoniae Infections of 13 serotypes," which recorded an increase of 0.1 pp.
  • Vaccination coverage for children who completed 2 years of age exceeded the values of 2020. However, for the group of children who completed 6 years of age, there was a decrease in coverage for all types of administered vaccines compared to the previous year. Nevertheless, the coverage remained above 95.0% for this age group.

Deliveries - Decrease in deliveries by 6.2%

  • A total of 1,727 deliveries were performed on resident parturients in the ARM, indicating a decrease of 6.2% compared to 2020 (1,842 deliveries). Among these deliveries, 23 were twins.
  • Of the total deliveries, 78.9% (1,363 deliveries) were from mothers aged between 25 and 39 years (1,363 deliveries).
  • The percentage of parturients aged 40 or older reached a record high of 8.8%, while the percentage of younger mothers (under 20 years) was the lowest (2.0%).

Mortality by Cause of Death - Increase in mortality due to malignant tumors; decrease in mortality from circulatory and respiratory system diseases

  • There were a total of 2,875 deaths among residents in the ARM, representing a 6.0% increase compared to the previous year (2,713 deaths in 2020).
  • Diseases of the circulatory system maintained their position as the leading underlying cause of death in the ARM, accounting for 809 deaths, which represents 28.1% of the total (compared to 30.5% in 2020). There was a decrease of 2.2% in deaths from these diseases compared to the previous year.
  • Malignant tumours reemerged as the second leading underlying cause of death in the region, with 676 deaths, accounting for 23.5% of mortality in the Region (compared to 24.4% in 2020). There was an increase of 2.1% in the number of deaths from malignant tumors compared to the previous year.
  • Deaths caused by diseases of the respiratory system were the third leading underlying cause of death, with 401 deaths, accounting for 13.9% of the total deaths observed in the Region (compared to 15.4% in 2020). There was a decrease of 4.3% in deaths from this cause compared to the previous year.
  • The proportion of deaths from "Diseases of the circulatory system" was higher among residents aged between 20 and 24 years. The cause "Malignant tumours" accounted for 33.3% of deaths among young persons in the 10-14 years and 15-19 years age groups, but it emerged as the leading cause of death among residents aged between 45 and 75 years. The cause of "Diseases of the respiratory system" had a higher proportion among deaths of persons aged 70 and older.

COVID-19 was the cause of death in 126 cases in the ARM. The mortality rate for this disease was 50.0 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants (124.5 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants at the national level). Among the deaths attributed to COVID-19, 81.0% occurred among persons aged 70 and older.
