DREM releases "In Focus" in reference to World Health Day

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira joined the celebrations of World Health Day by examining, through the data from the Survey on Living Conditions and Income (ICOR), how the health condition is perceived by persons aged 16 or older residing in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM). Additionally, the latest available data from the Hospital Survey regarding the number of hospitalisations, emergency service attendances, day hospital patients, complementary diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures, and voluntary interruptions of pregnancy are analysed.

The following indicators are highlighted:

In 2023, among the population aged 16 or older residing in the ARM:

  • 48.8% of persons self-assessed their health status as "Very good or Good" and 12.7% classified it as "Poor or Very poor";
  • 47.6% of persons reported having a "Chronic illness or prolonged health problem";
  • 34.9% of persons reported having limitations in performing activities due to a health problem.

In 2022, within the hospitals of the Autonomous Region of Madeira:

  • 24,539 hospitalisations were recorded;
  • 157.1 thousand attendances were made in emergency services;
  • 10.8 thousand patients received healthcare in a day hospital, with 61.6 thousand treatment sessions being conducted;
  • 6.8 million complementary diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures were performed;
  • 224 voluntary interruptions of pregnancy were legally carried out.
