DREM releases Environmental Statistics
Data gathered by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira for the year 2014 show that the distributed water through the public water system stood at 24.8 million cubic metres, a 4.8% decrease from 2013. 56.4% of that total was for household consumption (55.2% in 2013).
In 2014, the global production of solid waste in the Autonomous Region of Madeira reached 191.0 thousand tonnes, up by 49.5 thousand tonnes over the previous year. This increase is related to the deposition of inert material which jumped from 8.9 to 54.0 thousand tonnes between 2013 and 2014. The waste destined for recycling/valorisation outside the Region stood at 24.6 thousand tonnes (24.0 thousand tonnes in 2013).
The consolidated expenditure of the Regional Government of Madeira in environmental management and protection was 96.2 million euros, up by 16.4% from 2013. Of that total, 84.2% was destined to “Protection and remediation of soil, groundwater and surface water” (80.8% in 2013).
In 2014, there were 635 firemen in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (down by 18 from 2013), who provided 36,909 services (up by 3.1% from 2013), 72.4% of which were related to health/prehospital situations.
Compared to 2013, there was less rainfall in Funchal in the year of reference (482 mm in 2014 and 496 mm in 2013) and more in Porto Santo (483 mm in 2014 and 348 mm in 2013). In Funchal, the average maximum temperature was 22.8ºC, the same as in 2013. The average minimum temperature dropped from 17.3ºC in 2013 to 17.1ºC in 2014.
DREM releases Time Series on Environmental Statistics for the 1989-2014 period
DREM also releases today on its website, the Time Series on Environmental Statistics, updated with the data for 2014.
The series contains data about water supply, water treatment and drainage, solid waste, expenditures of the regional and local scope entities in environmental management and protection by economic aggregate and domain. Data on air quality, weather, forestry fires and firemen are also provided. In this latest edition new tables with data were included, namely blue flag beaches, quality of bathing waters, information on the nature and environment protection service and defense actions against forest fires.
