In June 2025

18 days with maximum temperatures exceeding 25 °C at the Lugar de Baixo station

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today a summary of the main meteorological data for June 2025, concurrently updating the respective dashboard. This information¹ is provided by the Regional Delegation of the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA I.P.) in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM).

Air Temperature

In June 2025, the highest average air temperature was recorded at the Lugar de Baixo station (22.3 °C), whilst the lowest was observed at the Chão do Areeiro station (13.0 °C).

Compared with the normal climatological values² for the month of June, all six stations with available data exhibited positive anomalies in mean air temperature. The largest deviation was observed at Funchal/Observatory, with an anomaly of +2.3 °C above the normal.

With regard to the monthly extremes, the absolute maximum temperature was 29.1 °C, recorded at Pico Alto on the 30th. The absolute minimum temperature was observed at Pico do Areeiro on the 3rd, with a value of 3.4 °C. Of particular note is the Lugar de Baixo station, which recorded 18 days with maximum temperatures exceeding 25 °C, significantly above the station's climatological norm of 2.8 days.

Precipitation

In June 2025, the highest monthly total precipitation was recorded at the Santana station (20.3 mm), while the highest daily value was observed at Chão do Areeiro on the 15th (3.7 mm). Conversely, the Funchal/Lido and Selvagem Grande stations recorded the lowest monthly totals (0.0 mm).

When compared with the climatological normal for June (reference period 1961–1990), all stations registered lower monthly precipitation totals, with Chão do Areeiro standing out due to a negative anomaly of 64.6 mm.

Regarding days with precipitation (rain, rainy and very rainy days), the Santana station recorded the highest number of days with rain (17 days with ≥ 0.1 mm) and the greatest number of rainy days (8 days with ≥ 1.0 mm). No station recorded very rainy days (≥ 10 mm).

Relative Humidity

In June 2025, the average monthly values of relative humidity ranged between 54% at Pico do Areeiro and 86% in Santana. The lowest daily value (3%) was recorded at Pico do Areeiro on the 9th, while the maximum value (100%) was observed at eight different stations on various days throughout the month.

Wind

Among the stations equipped with anemometers, the highest average wind intensity was recorded at Caniçal (20.7 km/h), while the lowest was observed at Monte (3.2 km/h). The strongest wind gust of the month was also recorded at Caniçal on the 29th, reaching 89 km/h.

Sunshine Duration

In June 2025, the number of sunshine hours (defined as hours of unobstructed solar radiation) was 240.1 hours at Porto Santo station (above the normal value of 203.9 hours), 216.0 hours at Santa Catarina/Airport³, and 162.2 hours at Funchal/Observatory (above the normal value of 150.6 hours).

Seawater Temperature

In June 2025, the average seawater temperature at the Molhe da Pontinha station (Funchal) was 21.2 °C, representing a positive anomaly of +1.1 °C compared to the climatological norm for the month. The highest temperatures (21.6 °C) were recorded on the 17th, 18th and 30th, while the lowest (20.7 °C) were observed on the 13th and 14th.

¹ – Daily data and cumulative monthly values refer to observations taken between 09:00 on the previous day and 09:00 on the current day.
² – Climatological normals for the period 1971–2000 were used for Porto Santo/Airport and Funchal/Observatory stations. For the remaining stations, the 1961–1990 reference period was applied.
³ – No climatological normals for sunshine duration are available for the Santa Catarina/Airport station.
