Temperatures were above the climatological normal, whilst precipitation was below
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) publishes today a summary of the main meteorological data for February 2026, simultaneously updating the respective Dashboard. This information¹ is provided by the Delegation of the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere I.P. (IPMA I.P.) in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM).
Air Temperature
In February, the highest mean air temperature was recorded at the Porto Moniz station (17.8 °C), whilst the lowest occurred at the Pico do Areeiro station (8.6 °C).
Compared to the climatological normals² for February, all stations for which this analysis was possible (7 stations) presented values above the reference values. The Chão do Areeiro station stands out, with a deviation of +4.2 °C from its respective climatological normal (5.6 °C).
Regarding extreme air temperatures, the absolute maximum temperature was recorded at the Quinta Grande station (25.8 °C, on the 24th), and the absolute minimum temperature at the Pico do Areeiro station (-1.0 °C, on the 3rd and 28th).
Precipitation
In February, the highest total monthly precipitation value was recorded at the Pico do Areeiro meteorological station (105.6 mm). It was also at this station that the highest daily precipitation value was observed, with 60.8 mm recorded on the 26th. In contrast, the lowest monthly value occurred at the Lido station (8.0 mm).
Compared to the 1961–1990 climatological normal for February, all stations presented negative anomalies, with Chão do Areeiro standing out (-284.5 mm).
Regarding the number of days with precipitation (days with rain, rainy days, and very rainy days), the Prazeres station stood out with the highest values across the different classes. There were 13 days with precipitation equal to or above 0.1 mm, corresponding to the highest number of rainy days. The highest number of rainy days (precipitation ≥ 1.0 mm) was also observed at this station, with 10 days. With regard to very rainy days (precipitation ≥ 10.0 mm), the maximum value was 3 days, recorded at the Prazeres and Pico do Areeiro stations.
Relative Humidity
In February, the monthly mean values of relative humidity ranged between 54%, at the Pico do Areeiro station, and 87%, at the Santo da Serra station.
The daily minimum value of relative air humidity was recorded at the Quinta Grande station, at 2% on the 23rd, whilst the maximum value (100%) was reached at 11 stations on different days of the month.
Wind
In February, among the meteorological stations equipped with an anemometer, the highest mean wind intensity was recorded at the Chão do Areeiro station, at 26.4 km/h, whilst the lowest occurred at the Monte station, at 5.3 km/h. The maximum wind gust was also recorded at the Chão do Areeiro station, reaching 116 km/h on the 5th.
Sunshine
In February, the number of hours of sunshine was 202.2 hours at the Funchal/Observatory station, a value above the respective climatological normal (141.4 hours).
At the Santa Catarina/Airport³ station, 193.8 hours of sunshine were recorded, whilst at Porto Santo/Airport the value was 166.6 hours, also above the climatological normal for this station (134.5 hours).
Sea water temperature
In February, the mean sea water temperature, measured at Molhe da Pontinha (Funchal), was 18.0 °C, a value 0.3 °C above the respective climatological normal for this month.
The highest daily mean temperature was recorded on the 1st and 24th, at 18.4 °C, whilst the lowest (17.6 °C) occurred on the 7th, 8th and 9th of February.

² – The 1971–2000 normals are used for the Porto Santo/Airport and Funchal/Observatory stations. For the remaining stations, the 1961–1990 normals are used.
