DREM publishes, for the first time, data on the sociodemographic characterisation of persons who obtained credit

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) publishes today, for the first time, information on the sociodemographic characterisation of persons who obtained credit from financial institutions operating in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), covering the period 2021 to 2024.

This information is broken down by type of credit — housing loans for permanent owner-occupied dwellings, other housing loans, personal loans, car loans, credit cards, and other types of credit — as well as by amount granted and by number of borrowers.

The information now released is compiled by Banco de Portugal (BdP) based on data from the Central Credit Register and refer to new loans granted to private clients (both residents and non-residents), excluding credit transfers between institutions.

From the Em Foco released today, which presents an analysis of the main indicators, the following points stand out:

• Total new credit granted – In 2024, financial institutions operating in the ARM concluded 56 445 new credit contracts with 38 980 persons, amounting to a total of 570 million euros.

• Housing loans for permanent owner-occupied dwellings – In the same year, 1881 housing loan contracts for permanent own residence were concluded, involving 2 521 persons and totalling 254 million euros.

• Personal loans – A total of 16 333 persons obtained personal loans in 2024, amounting to 137 million euros through 21 260 contracts.

• Car loans – In 2024, 6 071 car loan contracts were concluded by 7 013 persons, for a total amount of 89 million euros.

• Credit cards – 21 357 contracts associated with credit cards were concluded in 2024 by 19 217 persons, totalling 35 million euros.
