Passenger movement at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira recorded a year-on-year growth of 5.5%
According to information provided by ANA - Aeroportos de Portugal to the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), in May 2026, the airports of the ARM recorded a traffic of 541.5 thousand passengers, carried on 3 582 aircraft (commercial flights), representing year-on-year changes of +5.5% and +3.4%, respectively.
In the month under reference, Madeira Airport recorded a year-on-year increase in the number of passengers (520.1 thousand; +5.8%) and in aircraft movements (3 340; +3.5%). At Porto Santo Airport, there was an increase in aircraft movements (242; +2.1% compared with the same period of 2025), despite the decrease in the number of passengers (21.4 thousand; -1.5%).

In the first five months of 2026, the number of aircraft movements at the ARM airports rose by 2.6%, while the number of passengers grew by 3.9%.
In the month under review, each aircraft (considering both landings and take-offs) carried, on average, around 156 passengers (152 in May 2025) at Madeira Airport, while at Porto Santo that figure was around 88 passengers (92 in the same period in 2025).
In May 2026, passenger traffic at the ARM airports increased by 5.5%, year-on-year, in both international traffic (305.9 thousand) and the domestic segment (235.6 thousand).
At Madeira Airport, international traffic (57.7% of the total) predominated over domestic traffic (42.3%). At Porto Santo Airport, however, there was a predominance of domestic traffic (73.6% of the total), but with a smaller disproportion compared with the same period in 2025 (86.8%).
In the month under reference, scheduled flights at the ARM airports accounted for 94.9% of total aircraft movements and 97.2% of total passengers (94.2% and 96.4% in May 2025, respectively).
In May 2026, the load factor of aircraft movements at the ARM airports was 86.8%, corresponding to 87.1% at Madeira Airport and 81.2% at Porto Santo Airport. In the year-earlier period, lower load factors were recorded for the regional airports as a whole (85.7%), as well as at Madeira Airport (86.0%) and Porto Santo Airport (79.2%).

From January to May 2026, passengers embarked and disembarked at the ARM airports (excluding transit passengers) totalled 2 240.3 thousand, of which 42.4% corresponded to traffic exclusively between airports located in national territory, including internal and domestic connections, and 57.6% to international traffic. Within the latter, the United Kingdom (27.1%) and Germany (20.8%) were the main countries of origin and destination of international flights at the ARM airports. Poland (10.5%) occupied third position, followed by France (8.4%) and the Netherlands (6.2%).
