Overnight stays increased by 4.3%, passing for the first time the 800,000 mark

Initial estimates for August 2016 show increases in the tourism indicators with positive year-on-year rates of change in overnight stays (+4.3%), total revenue (+11.7%) and lodging revenue (+11.2%).

At the country level, the rates of change stood at 3.7% in nights spent, 11.9% in total revenue and 13.4% in revenue from accommodation.

In the month of reference, the number of overnight stays in the Autonomous Region of Madeira topped 812,2 thousand – a new all-time monthly record. The total revenue and the revenue from accommodation also registered new maximums (43.7 and 28.9 million euros, respectively).

Looking at the data broken down by market, it should be highlighted that the year-on-year change rates in nights spent by the Portuguese and foreign tourists were +7.4% and +3.8%, respectively. The German market grew by 15.6% and the British market rose by 11.6%.

In the first eight months of 2016, the overnight stays increased by 9.5% when compared to the same period of 2015, while the growth in total revenue (+15.6%) and lodging revenue (+17.3%) was more pronounced.

The net bed occupancy rate in the reference month reached 85.4%, up by 3.1 percentage points from the year before and the highest among the seven NUTS2 Portuguese regions.

The average income per room (RevPAR) recorded a year-on-year change rate of +10.7%, increasing to € 65.29.
